Dating poses distinct challenges for any woman but some would say, and perhaps fairly, that independent professional women have greater difficulties as they often don't always follow the traditionally set gender roles concerning 'feminine' behaviour. Because of this, certain unique problems may be encountered in the world of dating.
When dating, a professional woman may experience a strange sense of competitiveness from her date - especially if he is a male. Rightly or wrongly, many men feel uncomfortable with a woman who can support herself financially and some may actually be quite intimidated if she hastens to pay her share of the bill. Unconsciously, many men like to be the dominant figure in a relationship, not only in a physical sense but emotionally too; many professional women, especially the more independent ones, may feel somewhat threatened by this type of social behavior displayed by a male companion. Instinctively, many men are protective of their dates and clear lines of acceptable behavior may have to be discussed.
Although it may be relatively uncommon, some men see a professional women as a 'meal ticket' and so she may be at a greater risk as being a target for these types of financial seeking predators. She needs to be aware of the potential of being taken advantage of and trust her instincts when selecting appropriate dates. Alternatively, a pre-written check list that tests a dates motivations through subtle questioning may be a wise strategy to employ.
Some men still have an expectation that even if a woman is gainfully employed, she will resign from her job if a dating arrangement between a couple deepens and a more long-term relationship develops. The professional woman is someone who needs to have clear goals and expectations drawn up in advance in relation to any ongoing commitment with men she is dating. Setting balanced dating patterns that do not interfere with a woman's professional goals and obligations is also important to consider in advance. One doesn't like to think that a woman's career may be jeopardized by poor planning and lack of pondering on future relationship possibilities.
Because many independent professional women are naturally very well-organized and forward thinking individuals, these same qualities should stand her in good stead for any challenges that may arise in her dating life; many are competent, strong-minded clear thinkers who have an above average ability to communicate with others. And therefore some of the usual problems of dating and relating to others, whether men or women, may actually not be too troublesome to deal with. The workplace can be a great training ground for many types of human interaction and the skills gleaned here can prove invaluable in the world of dating.
