The first, and most important step in improving your grades, at any level of education, is to go at it with the right attitude. If you don't believe that it is important, you will not do what it takes to succeed. In my K-12 years, I always struggled with grades. I didn't like school, and my mind was never where it needed to be. As an adult, I attended a university, having been out working low paying jobs. Now I saw a reason for the education, and I was much more motivated to success. The same kid who struggled to maintain a C average was now a man graduating with honors.
The next big step is to study. Schedule time every day to study and keep up with the work. It's been estimated that you should schedule a minimum of 2-3 hours of study/work time for every hour of class. That's just to cover normal studying and class work. You will need to allot extra time for projects. Part of the study process is to do all of the practice work and answer all of the study questions. Don't just look at them and work out a vague answer in your head, or think "Yeah, I know that." Put pencil to paper and write it out. You will gain a much deeper understanding of the answer.
Speaking of scheduling your time. Schedule time to work on any projects. Work on them steadily throughout the semester. Do not wait until the deadline is looming, then try to throw something together. Most professors have seen enough of the same projects to know the difference between an A effort, and a last minute job. The more time you spend on the project, the more you will understand it.
Read all of your assignments. Don't just give it the quick once over. If your not used to reading to learn, it can be a bit daunting, especially at the university level, but it is worth it. If you can, consider taking a speed reading course to help you get through all of the reading that is required.
When reading, I recommend reading the introduction and conclusion first. Then give the chapter a quick scan. Take a few minutes when your done to jot down some notes and observations. Reread the chapter, this time in depth. Rewrite your notes adding more depth and detail. Put the reading aside for a day, then reread the introduction and conclusion, then scan the rest of the chapter. Once again rewrite your notes adding even more detail.
My last suggestion for improving your grade is to participate in class. Most professors factor class participation into the grade. Actively participate. Give thoughtful and complete answers to questions, and ask good questions. Don't make comments just for the sake pf using your voice. Make a contribution to the class.
Making good grades takes hard work and discipline, but it is worth it. The lessons you learn, and the process of learning will be of value long after you graduate.
