Reflections: The secret (fun) life of soccer moms

Remember when being a soccer mom actually meant you were a mom whose child was involved in soccer? Now a day, a "soccer" mom is the title we women get if we are involved in any aspect of delivering and picking up the children, watching and rooting at the games, taking care of refreshments or even taking on a leadership role in the activity. I say activity because it no longer applies to just soccer. You can be the mom of a baseball player, a cheerleader, a Girl or Boy Scout, or a child in band and drama club. Let's face it gals, if you are running nearly every morning, afternoon and evening for your child's activities, and still maintain a home, and some of us even holding a job as well, you are indeed a "soccer" mom.

I qualify 100%. This title should be stamped across my forehead, on the side of my mini van, and on my business cards. With three children, all active in sports and other extra curricular activities, there isn't a day that goes by that I am not driving the van, baking cookies or calling other parents on the phone to let them know upcoming events and information. Some times it can get very overwhelming. It is times like these that I find myself looking for the fun, my fun, my block out schedules, turn off the phone, and refuse to answer the door fun.
One of my many quick escapes is to put a CD in the player. Not Justin or Gwen or some other teen sensation that fills my house on a daily basis, but a real CD like Billy Joel or Queen. The notes of "Fat Bottom Girls" come out a little out of tune as I sing along, reaching way in back on the lowest shelf of the freezer and extracting my hidden carton of Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge. This reserve is for me alone and not even the hubby knows it exists. No need for a bowl, oh no, you have to eat it straight from the container, and it is always OK to dig around for the biggest chunks of fudge. This is a great minimum time escape especially if it is just past three and you know the bus will be arriving any minute and it's off you go!
Another bit of fun we moms can have is during our driving time. Now mind you it is harmless, but what a great way to make yourself feel like more than the worn down transporter for your kids. On a good day driving by myself to or from whatever activity, I can flip on my favorite radio station, apply a quick sheen of gloss to my lips and be a little flirty with the better looking male drivers next to me at the stop lights. Friendly smiles and waves are a great pick me
