Career guidance: Should you become a nurse?

I have been a healthcare worker since I was 18. I am 30 now. I started as a nurse aid and my employer sent me to school to be an LPN.

It is not a job for the faint of heart, as most of the time you are dealing with segments of society that most people don't even know exist. You will see and have to deal with things you could never expect.

You need to be able to think on your feet, and act without panicking. I could tell you horror stories of nurses I've seen who lost their head in crucial situations. Of course, your level of responsibility depends on what kind of nursing you are doing.

The public has a love/hate relationship with nurses. We are the first ones they blame when things decline with a loved one's condition because we are the faces they see. But if you have ever needed a nurse yourself, then you know just how important our job is. We are the ones who make you feel better.

If you want to be a millionaire, not the job for you. If you like people, give it a shot. Don't be disappointed if it's not for you, most people walk away. Empathy can be a useful quality and can assist you with your bedside manner, but if you let it get to you then your judgment can become clouded by emotion. And don't expect to ever hear thank-you.

That way, when you do hear it, it's a treat!
