The colors of Easter

by Sharon Mcavinue

Created on: April 16, 2011

Halloween and Thanksgiving may have the colors of autumn while Christmas has its sparkling winter shades.  Easter has colors that represent the spring season. This holiday falls at the time when nature is starting to be reborn while certain animals, plants and trees are beginning to wake up from their hibernations.

Easter normally falls on a Sunday, but it doesn’t have a permanent date because it usually depends on the calendar year. The holiday can fall on the last Sunday in March one year and the second Sunday in April the following year.

The colors of Easter depict the bright and cheerful as colors of this time of year. Yellow is popular because it represents baby chicks chirping in the grass, they’re one of the symbols of Easter. It signifies the birth of new life, which occurs each year with birds that spend time in the trees waiting for their eggs to hatch. White is neutral because it can go with just about with any type of outfit. Most eggs that are purchased in grocery stores are either brown or white, but white eggs are essential with it comes to creating colorful decorations for a centerpiece on a dinner table or to bring some zest to an Easter basket. White is also the color of the Easter Bunny, which is the main symbol of the holiday. Unlike Santa Claus who travels around the world in a sled to deliver toys to   girls and boys, the Easter Bunny is a big, friendly rabbit who hops around the globe delivering baskets full of treats to children.

The color pink is for girls who parade around in pretty dresses with ribbons in their hairs and their dolls dressed in different shades of pink. Blue is for boys, they wear this color in a variety of shades that range from sky blue to navy. It also depicts the color of the sky and sea.  Green represents the paper grass that goes inside the baskets, which helps cushion the eggs and other treats. Green is also the color of the grass where families go for spring picnics, they’ll lay down a few blankets and put out a basket full of food and desserts while enduring the warn sun in the sky. Green is also the color of leafy vegetables,   bunnies are herbivores whose diet consists of grass, flowers, lettuces and other types of vegetation.  That’s where the color orange comes in; it represents the carrot, which happens to be part of the Easter bunny’s diet.  There are certain candies such as marshmallows, chocolate and Reese’s pieces that are made into the shape of a carrot.

Other important colors such as, violet, lavender, purple, red and aqua are the same colors as the ones that get painted onto Easter eggs, which makes them look more like the flowers that bloom in the spring.
