Baltimore Orioles all-time win leaders

Created on: April 15, 2011

The Baltimore Orioles as we know them now, have like many current franchises, had other names and been located in other cities. The organization played as the Milwaukee Brewers from 1894-1901, then as the St Louis Browns from 1902-1953, before relocating to Baltimore in 1954. The Orioles are probably better known for the potent bats that they've had in the line up over the years, including Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripkin Jr, and Eddie Murray. But during the first six decades the team has been in Baltimore, they've had a number of great pitchers including Hall of Famer Jim Palmer.

Jim Palmer also happens to be number one on the Orioles all times wins list with 268. Palmer was the Orioles top pitcher during the franchises most successful run. He played his entire twenty year career (1965-1984) with the team, which included helping win six American League pennants and three World Series championships. Palmer is also the only pitcher in history to win a World Series game in three different decades. After he retired in 1984 with a 268-152 record and a 2.86 ERA, Palmer was an easy first ballot Hall of Famer in 1990.

Palmer's teammate Dave McNally is number two on the list with 181 wins. McNally, along with Palmer, was one of four twenty game winners on the Orioles staff in 1971, which is a feat that has happened only one other time in baseball history. McNally pitched for the Orioles from 1962-1974. McNally was a three time All-Star who holds the distinction of being the only pitcher in Major League history to have hit a grand slam in a World Series game.

Mike Mussina is number three on the list with 147. Though Mussina is best known for the years he pitched for the Yankees, he was a great starter on some terrible Baltimore teams from 1991 to 2000. Mussina retired in 2008 with a career 270-153 record, a 3.68 ERA, and 2, 813 strikeouts which should make him a first ballot Hall of Famer when his time comes.

Mike Cueller had 143 wins for Baltimore from 1969-1976. Cueller was a teammate of Palmer and McNally's and was on of the four to win twenty games in 1971. Cueller was a tough left hander with a great screwball and change-up. By the time he arrived in Baltimore in 1969 he had already pitched for the Red, Cardinals, and Astros. Cueller finished his career as a four-time All Star, a Cy Young award winner (1969), and a World Series Champion.

Mike Flanagan comes in fifth on the list with 141 wins. Flanagan pitched for the Orioles from 1975-1987 then again from 1991 to 1992. Flanagan finished his career with a 167-143 record and 3.90 ERA. He also won the AL Cy Young award in 1979 and was a member of the Orioles championship team in 1983.
