Looking to get a dog? Those adorable, fuzzy faces can be quite tempting! However, there are certain things you have to consider before taking the plunge.
1. Research the Breed
It is extremely important to understand the breed characteristics of dogs before you choose one. There are so many things to consider: Does this breed need a lot of exercise? Do they shed? Do they tend to bark a lot? Are they easy to train? Read up on these features before you choose a certain breed. While you may think one type of dog is particularly adorable, that does not mean it is the best fit for you. A good place to visit is the
American Kennel Club. This site has a lot of information on registered breeds.
2. Research vet costs
When getting an older dog, many of their early vaccinations have already been covered, and they might perhaps not need as much vet attention. However, if you are getting a puppy, vet costs can really affect the wallet in the beginning. Make sure to figure out what kinds of shots your puppy needs (breeders and pet stores will have this information), and then find a vet provides reasonable costs. I recommend checking out their services listing on their website, and calling them if they don't provide pricing information.
3. Understand that dogs are hard work
One thing that people tend to forget about when staring into the innocent eyes of a new puppy is that they are hard work. This does not mean-at all-that the work isn't worth it. I have two dogs that I love dearly. However, it's important to have a plan of attack regarding training and taking care of the dog. For instance, do you work a 9-5? Who is going to walk the dog during that time? Leaving puppies alone for that long is usually not a great idea! They will tear up your house. You can consider crating them, but that's also quite a long time. Also, are you going to train the puppy yourself or do you have the money to send it to training? These are things to consider as well.
4. Buy the appropriate items
Before you get your dog, make sure you have the appropriate necessities ready for him or her. I highly recommend a crate, a leash, and a collar, at the very least. A chew toy or two is helpful, especially if the puppy is teething. Also, obviously, you need food for the dog, and you'll need to purchase a food bowl and a water bowl. Sometimes, a flea bath shampoo is helpful if the puppy is coming directly from a pet store.
Most of the time, dogs are wonderful pets because they give lots of love and attention, and oftentimes, behavioral issues are just as much the owner's fault as the dog's. However, if you are prepared to choose the right breed for you, and you have a strong and useful plan of attack for training, paying the associated bills, and providing the dogs with necessities, you will enjoy the transition to becoming a pet owner.
