The earliest symptoms of pregnancy

Created on: April 14, 2011

When you think you may be pregnant, it might seem that time is moving in slow-motion. Most pregnancy tests cannot detect pregnancy in its most preliminary stages. Fortunately, your body often gives cues during times like this. Always pay attention to what your body is telling you. Following is a guide to detecting the earliest signs of conception.

Implantation Bleeding

While a missed period is a major signifier of pregnancy, often, implantation bleeding occurs before the actual missed period. Implantation bleeding is caused by the binding of the embryo to the uterine wall. This binding often results in light bleeding. It is usually only a few drops. If you experience extremely heavy bleeding or hemorrhaging, go to the doctor immediately.

Bodily Changes

During pregnancy, a rush of hormones can cause a myriad of alterations in the body. Many of these changes become apparent in the breasts. In the primary stages of pregnancy, the breasts can become swollen, sore and tender. They may feel this way during menstruation as well. Pregnancy hormones can also cause skin discolorations. During the earliest stages of pregnancy, you might notice a darkening of the nipples.

Nausea

Nausea is absolutely one of the most off-putting symptoms of pregnancy. While not all women experience morning sickness, it is very common and usually causes no harm to the fetus. If you are feeling sick to your stomach, especially in the morning, you might be pregnant. While pregnancy nausea has earned the name ‘morning sickness,’ it does not necessarily occur in the morning. Unfortunately, the feeling can last well throughout the day. You may also become extremely sensitive to certain smells.

Craving and Aversions

Those hormonal changes can cause intense cravings and aversions to certain foods. If you are suddenly disgusted by one of your favorite foods, this very well could be a sign of pregnancy. Also, if you are craving something out of the ordinary, you might want to opt for a pregnancy test. At times, you may find yourself craving a food that ends making you sick afterwards. This is just a dirty little trick that pregnancy hormones play upon the body.

Overall, every single one of these symptoms is indicative of pregnancy. However, many of these symptoms can be brought on by some other cause. Once you reach the time that your period should occur, most pregnancy tests can detect these hormonal changes. If you receive a positive reading on an at-home pregnancy test, call your doctor immediately to make an appointment. Congratulations!
