When looking for hair style the most common place, and possibly best place to look for ideas, is in magazines. Here you can see famous people donning hair styles in different contexts, and we tend to decide what hairstyle we like based on how good it looks on them. But, you need to remember that no matter how great a style looks on someone else, they are not you. They do not have the same hair type, facial features, colouring etc. as you. You must therefore tailor styles to you in order to create one that suits.
Although there are numerous factors to take into consideration when choosing which hair style is best for you, your facial features is probably the largest aspect to consider. Here are some tips on deciding which hair style is best for your facial features.
1. Face shape
Identifying your face shape and using it to decide on the basics of your hair style is very important. You need to bear in mind that the ideal face shape is oval so, this is the shape that your style needs to work towards.
Long (e.g. Sarah Jessica Parker) - long faces suit styles which are jaw length or slightly longer. Too long and it elongates the face further, too short and it looks disproportionate to the length of the face. If you have a long face and want to have long hair, try framing the face with some bangs/feathers which start at the jaw. Adding plenty of texture to the style is also a good idea as the different lengths shorten the face, as does highlights.
Square (e.g. Katie Holmes) - square faces tend to have quite strong jaw lines so choosing a jaw length blunt style is not very flattering. Length wise, it depends on how long your face is, and you need to follow the 'rules' of choosing a style for a long face. But the main thing is to choose a style which elongates the face so that it stretches the squareness, that also softens the jaw line - for example, having the ends cut at different lengths or framing the face with bangs/feathers. Square faces should also avoid straight across fringes as this too enhances the squareness. If you do want a fringe, consider having one that is soft and swept to the side.
Round (e.g. Amanda Seyfried) - round face shapes benefit from longer hair as this elongates the face. Very short styles can look cute, but you need to have a certain personal style to really pull it off. Chin length styles should be avoided as it only makes the face look even
