There are two different styles of golf bags available on the general market, and each of these bag designs is aimed towards very different methods of transporting the bag around the course. We either have a stand bag, which is designed to be carried by the player, or a cart bag, which is designed for use in conjunction with a golf trolley. Each of these bags requires different features to make them useful towards the user.

• The Stand Bag

This particular design of bag is primarily designed to be carried by the golfer. The key feature to consider is the strap for carrying it with. For a number of years, all golf bags had just one strap attached onto them, meaning that all the weight of the bag was placed onto just one shoulder. This resulted in a number of golfers suffering from problems with their shoulders and backs from carrying the bag in this method. This carrying design has since changed over into a dual strap configuration, which enables the bag to be carried on the golfers back in a similar method to a backpack, so avoiding unnecessary strain. Even though a majority of bags use this dual strap design, there are still a number of different designs out on the market. It is advisable to try out the straps on the bag by loading it up with a set of clubs, and feeling the weight and way in which the bag sits on the shoulders and back, before even considering the bag.

Another key component is the stand itself. Ensure that the stand can be easily activated, and that the feet of the stand are of a substantial size, especially if you play on a course that is renowned for being quite soft under foot. Other useful characteristics include a dry pocket; these are usually signified by a waterproof zip and soft inlay to the pocket. Look for a sizable pocket or pockets with adequate space for wet weather gear, food, golf balls, tees and all of the other accessories. An extra attribute that a lot of the newer style bags are starting to feature is a cooler pouch or pocket, which can be invaluable on those hot summer treks around the course.

• The Cart Bag

A cart bag is designed for use with either a manual or electric trolley. Due to this aid in transporting the bag, the general weight and size of the average cart bag will be greater than that of a stand bag. However, due to this enhanced size, a cart bag will generally carry
