The reality of working from home

by Jeannette Payne

Created on: April 12, 2011

Opportunities related to working from home are posted all over the internet and even in newspapers and magazines. They all shout out the good news of convenience and making a nice passive income from completing very few hours of work. While the majority of offers for obtaining work from home are not legitimate, there are some that actually do work but not in the way that most advertisements explain it. In fact, the reality is quite different.

Time and Scheduling

Despite what people think, you need to put a lot of time into these businesses to make them work. It doesn’t matter what industry you find yourself in, unless the program or plan is not legitimate then you will have to put a lot of hours in. The most time will be at the beginning and you may be able to decrease the number of hours as you make yourself known online or in your industry, but expect to be working well more than full-time hours unless you want to settle for a small income.

It is a lot easier for most people when they set up a schedule for their work. This might not be practical in some cases but having a flexible schedule is often better than having nothing. Without a schedule, it is tempting to be distracted by other household chores and the thought that the work can be done later.

Disruptions

There can be many disruptions throughout the day and you tend not to notice them until you have a lot of work to do. The disruptions might come through the telephone, children, pets, social media, household chores, visitors and hundreds of other possible things. These disruptions need to be kept to a minimum or the work that is essential to your income does not get completed.

Taking the phone off the hook, reminding friends that you are still working even though you are at home, keeping your other chores to a certain time of day, occupying the children with activities or homework, amongst other solutions are required to be successful at this.

Discipline

For any individual that finds it difficult to be motivated on their own energy, you are not advised to work from home unless you absolutely love it and think about hardly anything else. You will not get the nudge you need to work at home from anyone else but yourself. If you do get the nudge that you need from someone else, after so many of these, you will grow to dislike the person and the work. Discipline is necessary for being successful when working at home and this discipline needs to come from within yourself.

Enjoyment
