Why it is important that people are rewarded for their work

Whenever employees are surveyed about what most contributes to job satisfaction or dissatisfaction, the top two responses are nearly always salary and recognition. The message to employers is simple: people need to feel rewarded for the work that they do.

Nothing can sap someone's morale in the workplace faster than the feeling of being underpaid and unappreciated. Without the financial or emotional reward that should come from doing good work, it is difficult for employees to feel that they have a personally rewarding career. After all, most people spend more waking hours at work than they do at home - if it isn't personally rewarding, it becomes very disenchanting to keep coming day after day.

Feelings of disenchantment and a lack of appreciation quickly lead to lower motivation and losses in productivity. As a manager, one of the biggest problems you can face is a team that feels unrewarded. On the flip side, if employees feel appreciated, well-compensated, and that their contribution is valued, they are much more likely to continue to achieve at high levels - when hard work is rewarded and rewarding, people are motivated to continually achieve at higher levels. High achievement drives positive results, and serves to make any business or organization successful.
