Taking care of a sick loved one can take a toll on the caregiver, both physically and emotionally. Have another life depending on your care is a great responsibility. Most of the energy of the caregiver is directed towards his patients and their own well-being is often neglected. Personal concerns take a back seat because the job itself can be overwhelming. In the case of caring for someone you love with terminal illness, there is that feeling of helplessness and inadequacy.

It is important that caregivers take steps in preventing burnout. Signs of burnout include depression, exhaustion and impatience. Such signs can lead to health problems related to stress.  Being in control of your mental and physical state in these difficult times is important because patient care will be severely affected. Here are ways to prevent caregiver burnout:

Find time for yourself

Engage in activities that distract you from thinking and worrying too much about the situation. Take up the hobby that you are interested in. It may be playing sports, gardening, cooking or needlepoint. Amuse yourself with lighthearted activities like watching a comedy flick or playing video games. Pamper yourself with a massage or a bubble bath. Play soft music that relaxes the mind.

Ask for help

It is alright to ask for help. Get someone to replace you so you can rest. Know your limitations. No one can work 24 hours a day. There will be other people who are willing to help you. Get someone to do house chores so you can concentrate on looking after your loved one. Find a support group in your area. Some groups deliver meals and can run errands for you.

Talk to someone

The emotional stress can get to you. It is nice to have someone to talk. Confide to a trusted friend or family member. Find a community or organization where you share experiences. Your insights will probably help someone in the future. Learn from others. There are people with first-hand experiences in caring for the sick who can share valuable knowledge on howto deal with situations such as yours. There may be ways you can make some processes easier. If you belong to a church, church leaders may be able to provide support and words of encouragement that will lift your spirits.

Learn more about the illness

It is often said that knowledge is power. Knowing what to expect from the illness would better prepare you on how to address certain situations when they arise. You can manage expectations and equip yourself on steps to handle them better. You will be more efficient and able to manage fears and apprehensions.

Exercise, rest and eat well

Caregivers need to be healthy. Exercise recharges your energy. When your activities involve a lot of lifting, you need to strengthen your muscles. The body also releases endorphins when exercising. Endorphins are "happy hormones" that will keep you in a positive spirit. Sleep helps keep your focus. You are prone to committing mistakes when sleep-deprived and that can be detrimental to your patient.  Eat a balanced diet.  You need nourishment for stamina.

Being able to manage the stress that accompanies caring for a sick person can help you become an effective caregiver. When you feel good about yourself, you can give better care to your sick loved one.
