When looking at studying particular bible verses, the task can seem daunting. Without knowing all of the context or the necessary historical background the verse can lack some of the rich and profound meaning otherwise found. In the next few paragraphs, the section from Jude, chapter 1:5-6 will be explored. Hopefully this will allow others to understand more about this beautiful passage and how to look at bible passages in general.
Jude, Chapter 1:5-6. "I wish to remind you, although you know all things, that [the] Lord who once saved a people from the land of Egypt later destroyed those who did not believe. The angels too, who did not keep to their own domain but deserted their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains, in gloom, for the judgment of the great day." This exact quote came from "The International Student Bible For Catholics". Bible quotes can be found online or within actual print bibles. The phrasing of the quote may change from Bible to Bible but its meaning will remain the same.
This passage is all about caution. Even though the Israelites witnessed many miracles they still perished when they lost their faith. Regardless of whether or not you are a member of a religious profession or attend mass every Sunday, you can still falter in your faith. It is possible and it happens often. God is forewarning everyone in this passage that He wants people to continue to follow their faith and live their lives accordingly. God is essentially saying that no one is safe. Don't think that you can just glide along as an okay person, but choose to challenge yourself to be a great person.
In today's culture, it seems like most people think that they can merely state, "I believe." This is all that they need. It isn't. You need more. You need to prove yourself to the Lord. Prove that you do love Him and that you will put Him first. It is true that only God knows what is in the depths of your heart. This passage is reminding everyone not to let go of their beliefs. It is reminding everyone to keep trusting in the Lord. Work hard to include God in your everyday life and remember that it is always best to strive for more. Draw yourself closer to God and follow His will in everything that you do.
