10 things that will get you in big trouble at work

With the job market as tight as it has been, it is probably wise for most employees to know the 10 things that will get you in big trouble at work. While there are numerous problems that can occur (some of them out of your control) there are some that can be avoided. Here are some thoughts on those things that could cause the most problems.

1. Disrespect to customers

It is important to remember that all businesses depend on their customers. Even when a customer is wrong, it is imperative that they be treated with the utmost respect. While a first offense may get you a warning, it is highly unlikely that a business will tolerate a second incident of disrespect to a customer.

2. Excessive absences and tardiness

While there are some legitimate reasons for being out of work or for being late for work, those who display a pattern of excessive absences and tardiness are likely to find their jobs in jeopardy. Many employers have policies in place that will allow for tardiness of up to 15 minutes without docking your pay, however a pattern of this type of behavior can result in your being warned or even fired.

3. Falsification of records

Companies must maintain certain records in order to be in compliance with reporting agencies. This means that if you falsify any records, your employer may suffer fines or other penalties. Financial records, insurance records and even work flow records must never be falsified.  Consult your company policy manual for additional information regarding record keeping.

4. Theft of company property

While it may start off innocently enough by taking a handful of pens or handful of paper clips home, theft is a crime regardless of where it occurs. Companies who are watching their bottom line may not miss a pen or a few paper clips but when you start taking home a ream of paper or other supplies and equipment, you are putting your job on the line.

5. Interaction with co-workers

There is a heightened awareness in the workplace regarding harassment of employees. This often results in companies maintaining a policy that strictly forbids certain types of activities towards other co-workers. This may be an encompassing policy that strictly forbids dating, certain word usage and will nearly always involve any type of threatening behavior.  If a problem develops with a co-worker the best way to protect your job is to speak to your superior.

6. Defying your superiors

Companies develop policies so that employees understand the "chain of command".
