Applying for your U.S. passport is well worth the effort to obtain a document that serves well as personal identification and opens the door to international travel. The Department of State (DOS)regulates the issuance of U.S. passports and clearly maps the application process on its user-friendly website. First time applicants learn where to apply, age restrictions, documents needed, fees charged and timelines for receiving your passport. To avoid multiple trips to an application facility, be sure to carefully review all requirements, before completing your application and gathering your documents. Failure to provide information requested on the form may cause significant processing delays and/or application denial.
Where to apply
All new applicants are required to apply in person. The DOS provides complete lists of regional application sites by zip code and includes click-through information with addresses, hours and other details of interest. Generally, you will find that several local U.S. post offices and your Clerk of the County Court are authorized to accept passport applications. If you need your passport for international travel in less than 2 weeks, you must make an appointment to be seen at your Passport Agency.
Documents needed
When applying in person, you will need to provide the following documents: (Review the DOS website to understand the types of documents accepted for proof of Citizenship, personal identification, etc.)
1. Completed, Unsigned Application for a U.S. Passport (Form DS-11) You will sign the application, when the Acceptance Agent requests your signature.
2. Evidence of U.S. Citizenship - All citizenship documents will be returned with your new passport or will be mailed separately.
3. Current Identification
4. Photocopy of Current ID – The DOS offers precise photocopy guidelines. The photocopy must show the front and back of your ID on plain, white 8 ½ x 11 standard paper stock, with images only on one side of each page. Carefully review the guidelines to be sure you follow required U.S. passport procedures.
5. Social Security Number – You MUST provide your SSN, in accordance with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service Code.
