party's ideologies becomes more important than the needs of the people, as is the case in our nation today, it's time to take measures that ensure this can never happen again.
Political parties support their local, State, and Federal candidates for office by providing money, organization, and campaign oversight. The goal is to win the election, and the party is geared towards winning as many elections as possible. The elections of 2006 are a good example of a well-oiled political machine selling and closing its ideology to an entire nation. The Democratic party took over "control" of the house and senate in the last election, but if the needs of the people were really first and foremost, talk of "control" would never be an issue. After all, when it comes to the needs of the people, ideally, political affiliation should always run a distant second. That, sadly, is not the case in this nation.
How could one political party possibly gain total control, though, to the extreme of Totalitarianism? It's quite simple really, and has happened numerous times in supposed democratic nations. Nazi Germany is one example that comes to mind. When a political party stops putting the people first, and instead espouses the ideology that the people need the party, the result will be loss of freedom, loss of opinion, and loss of diversity. No one can deny that political parties are designed to push forth an ideology, steadily gaining support, until the opposition has been reduced to an insignificant minority. Any majority that a party gains is never enough; the political party will continue to push for a greater majority, and thus, will continue to push towards its goal of power without opposition. That is what Totalitarianism is. That is the end goal of every political party.
I admit that you would never hear Nancy Pelosi or George Bush utter words such as this in a speech. The fact is, they may never believe that their political party has such an ideology. But they don't have to admit it; the principal of totalitarianism is inherent in the forming of a political party. Individual politicians in our democratic society do not enter service eying absolute power and the ability to remove freedom from this nation, many enter service to help the nation progress toward the ideals they espouse.
Sadly, though, when it comes to political parties, you can't just focus on individuals, because the group is always more important than the individual in any party. The group dynamic is the dangerous
