Where is God?

by Rahman Majere

Created on: April 10, 2011

The question may be interpreted in two different ways. First, it reflects upon the physical and psychological location and presence of God. Another issue here is the concept of God itself and how this concept is faring in the the modern world. To that end, this article aims to address both these issues with rough translations from various scriptures. Due to the nature of translating in general, these translations should not be taken as direct substitutes for the original texts.

Let's begin with the location of God first. Almost every child who is brought up in a religious manner will inevitably wonder about many things, often much to their parents' great exasperation. Indeed, many a child has innocently asked their caretakers about the exact location of God. After all, for a being that is supposedly omnipotent *and* omnipresent, God seems to be strangely elusive to a young child.

The answer varies greatly depending on a person's exact faith. You could be a Greek of ancient times and sagely advise that most deities exist either in Olympus or Tartarus (for the titans). Certain Christians on the other hand, will answer that God exists in Heaven and was once on Earth in the form of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him). Atheists may claim that God exists only in the imagination of those lacking precisely that quality while some pagans and free thinkers are more inclined to saying that God exists in all things or even that we are a part of the God entity itself.

In this author's humble opinion, it is the Dominion of God that is everywhere. We can see this idea in the Quran of the Muslim. The rough translation goes as follows: "God knows both the hidden and apparent". Similar verses can be found in the scriptures of other major religions.

But the exact location of God may be something that is beyond our comprehension. Perhaps the question of the location may be meaningless when it is applied to God for truly God is an entity unlike any other. We see this notion in the Quran proclaiming that "there is none like unto Him" and a verse from a certain Hindu scripture that says that there is nothing like God, not even in the least bit.

Yet, at the same time, the presence of God itself is something we can see reflected in God's creations. We have a taste of God the Tester when we encounter life's harshness and we see the glory of God when we behold the awesome scale of his cosmic creations. We see God's subtlety in genetics and surely a spark of God's own compassion resides
