The situation seems desperate. Many little cares press heavily each day. It seems that if anything can go wrong it does. The company is laying off, the dog dies, the car quits, and there are serious medical problems to deal with but no money and no insurance. How do you keep your faith in a time like this?
First, keep your mind stayed on the Lord. Isaiah 26:3,4 says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.”
Instead of focusing on how bad your troubles are, focus on God. You cannot fix your troubles anyway. Only God has the power to take care of those. Spending your time worrying about your problems and trying to find ways to solve them in your own strength will only make you more depressed. When you fail, it will leave you downhearted.
Second, trust in the Lord. Isaiah 26:3,4 promises that, if you keep your mind stayed upon the Lord and trust in Him, you will have perfect peace. You may think about God and what He is like. You may dwell on Him and His character. You may even look at the promises of God in the Bible and quote them over and over to yourself. But if you do not trust in the Lord, you will not have perfect peace. Perfect peace comes from trusting in Him.
Third, remember that, if you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, He is always with you. There is nothing that can separate you from His love. Romans 8:38,39 says, “I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38,39)
Perhaps you have been facing great hardships. Perhaps you have been burdened down with the toil of the day. Yet your labour seems vain and your heart seems as if it would fail. Perhaps you are facing danger or fear, and you wish you could hide. You can hide. Hide in the bosom of the Lord Jesus. For “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” (Deuteronomy 33:27a) God has promised, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (See Hebrews 13:5)
Fourth, do not try to
