Short stories: Full moon rising

 FULL MOON RISING

Old faithful and pale moon, full with your iridescent-bright glow, hanging high above the clouds—watcher of the tides and stars, and the cool breezes that whip through the trees. Why do you choose to mock me—do you find some curious comfort reveling in my hopeless despair?  If I shut my eyes tight, I can almost hear your deep-throated cackle, laughing maniacally from the starry tapestry unfolding in the night.

I only have minutes left before the strange curse begins to rise up again. Soon, my blood will begin to boil, churning through my veins like a torrent tidal wave. Pain unlike anything ever thought to be imaginable, but then you realize—this is only the beginning. Bones slowly begin snapping, contorting in a horrific symphony of agony, most unkind.  As the final moments of the transformation complete, and the last of my humanity is shed; the hunger takes over—the monster wakes.

“How much longer till we get to the cabin, Fred?” he said. “I can’t wait until I get my hands on that blue-eyed beauty.” He was hungry too.

William Taggart was a filthy sort of beast, which thankfully, made my decision all that much easier. C’mon, you can’t really blame me, can you?

“Oh don’t you worry; the cabin is only a hop-skip-and-a-jump—just past that clearing up ahead.” I could feel the thrum of the night music calling out to me. A couple hundred yards to the East, a female Doe had already caught my scent, and was already bounding back into the dense foliage.

“Why’d you come out all the way out here—don’t get me wrong, I likes’ a bit of privacy too, but man did it have to be so damn far?”  William huffed.

“You can’t be too safe; besides, out here, nobody can hear them scream!” It was true, at least for the second part.

A sadistic smile twisted across his plain-round face—he was obviously the kind that got-off on torturing his victims.  Don’t worry old boy, a few more minutes and you will get what’s finally coming to you.  God, I could feel it now; like a thousand centipedes crawling beneath my skin—writhing and squiring their way to the surface.  Above my old friend was still keeping a watchful eye—the countdown had already begun.

“So…ummm, how long you been’ doing this?”

Some idle chit-chat before getting
