Poetry: Walk away

by John Gormley

Created on: April 08, 2011

A homeless man, no food, his bed the street,
Asking for money or anything I can spare to help him back on his feet,
“All you want is Cigarettes and booze”, I said, “why the hell should I pay”,
So I turned my back and I walked away.

In the house next door an argument breaks out,
I hear the sound of leather on flesh and her screams and her shouts,
I was going to call the police but it isn’t really my place to say,
So I turned up my TV and I walked away.

I saw an old man get kicked out his seat on the bus,
The driver said that his race shouldn’t be sitting near us,
I could have offered him my seat but that isn’t the way,
So I got off at my stop and I walked away.

I saw a young girl getting kicked and abused,
The kids said she shouldn’t be wearing her burka in school,
As the shots came in she dropped to her knees to pray,
That’s when I turned and I walked away.

On my way home from a bar I was stabbed in the back,
No reason, no logic, a random attack,
I called for help to a man but I heard him say,
Nothing to do with me mister, and he walked away.
