Swimming is the best workout for you. It is better even than running because it is low impact. There is no pounding or grinding in your ankles, knees, hips, or back. There is no need for expensive sneakers with arch and ankle support. All you need is a bathing suit and a pair of goggles.
While running consists of the same repetitive movements, working only certain muscle groups, swimming works every muscle group at once and there are several strokes so you can break up the monotony of the workout.
When you run, you are at the mercy of the weather. Who wants to run when it's raining or snowing? Or, for that matter, when it's 100 degrees? This drives many people indoors to treadmills. Treadmills are boring and they force you to run at one speed forever. There is no natural increase or decrease in speed. Indoor swimming pools are readily available and can be used in all types of weather. If you choose to swim in an outdoor pool, you get the added benefit of the sun on your skin without that sweaty feeling that happens when you run (though you do still sweat, so drink lots of water).
Most people do not know how to structure a swim workout, however. There are books of workouts and drills available to remedy this. Be sure to purchase one that adapts for your skill level.
When you get out of the pool after your first swim you will know that you have done a good workout. Make sure to stretch or you will be so sore that you won't be able to get out of bed the next day.
