Upon hearing of a natural disaster or other large-scale tragedy, our first instinct is to assist our fellow man. For those of less well-intentioned hearts, they may use this situation to take advantage of that desire to help others. When looking for a way to help provide relief to Japan, be sure to give your contributions to a reputable organization. Fake aid groups pop up with every catastrophe, but simple steps can assure you that your donation is really going to help.
The surest way to verify that your donation will be used as you intend is to contribute to the specialized efforts of well-known international charities. Organizations such as The Red Cross and the Salvation Army are very active in relief efforts around the world. Large and well-organized groups not only set up dedicated funds for disasters such as Japan's recent tragedy, they also use the donations very effectively. Guides to the most effective charities to donate to abound online, a bit of research can show exactly what portion of every dollar goes to providing help rather than administrative costs. An effectively operated charity group should deliver at least 65 cents per dollar in assistance.
If a lesser-known group looks like a good place to contribute your part to the relief efforts, take a moment to do a quick bit of research. By looking up the group in a basic search, you'll be able to see if they have an official website. Make note of whether this site mentions any government recognition of their status as a non-profit organization. Having a .org domain does not mean they're a non-profit. Be on the lookout for vague websites, mis-spelling and other errors likely to be caught by a legit and organized charitable group. A charity scam may not take the same care in their emails, website and other presentations, rushing to strike while emotions are high.
For the safest and most effective ways to send relief, work with established and reputable humanitarian organizations. Whether you choose Doctors without Borders, The Red Cross or another well-known and trusted group, or a lesser known more focused group, be sure to verify their status as a legitimately helpful organization. As many choose to donate online, take a few minutes to look into where you're donating to. It's a good feeling to offer help when it's needed, but it's even better to be sure that help will provide the needed relief, support and assistance that Japan needs right now.
