The floor is littered with scraps of paper
Half-written poems, old letters from friends
Leatherbound volumes cover the shelves
Faded with age, and multiple readings
They cover the desk, still bits show through
Ink spots, dried wax and parchment
Fountain pens, ink wells, pictures too
Portraits of family and nature inspire
Perched on the walls o'er mountains and heaps
Notebooks lay open, others lay stacked

No garbage receptacle for everything's good
Everything's wanted, all has a purpose

Indeed, she thinks, this is a fine mess
