How to avoid getting scammed on eBay

eBay can a fun and smart way to shop, if you know how to avoid the scams.  While eBay has made many changes to prevent less reputable sellers from scamming buyers, there are still a few things to look out for.  Armed with knowledge of the tricks used, you can save money and headaches while shopping on eBay.

First and foremost, be sure you understand what you are bidding on.  If the item description and photos don't make it clear exactly what you're looking at, you can use the 'ask seller a question' box on the item page.  Be sure to ask questions at least a day or two before the auction closes to allow time for the seller to respond.  Beware of vague descriptions, the seller may be trying to hide information or just lazy, neither of which is a good sign.

Next you should look over the details of the auction.  How much is shipping?  Many sellers have found an inflated shipping fee and low item price allow them to dodge eBay fees while still getting a good price for their wares.  While technically not a scam, this practice is ethically questionable at best.  This is why the feedback system has added ratings for shipping costs.  To determine what's a fair price for shipping, look at a few similar items and see if those sellers are asking for around the same price to ship their items.  Keep in mind, not only does international shipping cost more, it also takes longer to get your item.

Before bidding, also look at the seller's feedback rating.  New sellers without feedback or with very little feedback call for caution.  It's not unusual for a new seller to begin with a few low-ticket items to gain trust in the community before listing more pricey items.  It's quite smart actually.  If you're comfortable dealing a with a seller after reading the reviews of other people's purchases, it may be safe to bid.  eBay has gone to great lengths to protect it's users from scams, but their protection is only helpful if you use your own common sense and look out for yourself.

The old cliche 'To The Buyer Beware' is good to keep in mind.  eBay can be a wonderful place to shop and find exactly what you want or need at great prices, or it can just as easily be a heartbreaking disappointment.  Shop carefully, read the item descriptions well and don't hesitate to ask questions.  With a clear understanding of the seller's policies and methods, you can find those trustworthy sellers offering great deals on things you want.  It's like any other marketplace, an informed consumer can do quite well while ignoring the scam offers.  Knowledge is your best weapon in protecting yourself from scams on eBay.
