In the business world, one can not always expect to have one's every need met in the job one chooses. Often times there are trade-offs and one has to take some bad in order to balance the good. But how does one know when it is time to leave one's current employer for a better opportunity? What are some points to consider before making the switch? This article endeavours to explore some of the reasons why one might need to leave one's current employer for a better opportunity.
You've Topped Out on the Pay Scale
One reason why you might consider leaving your job is that you have topped out on the pay scale. You are making as much as you can in this position and there is no hope of a raise. With current prices continuing to climb on things like food, gas and other living expenses, with no hope of a raise you will start feeling the pinch and it will only get harder to make ends meet as time goes on. You might need to consider leaving your employer if they are unable to provide any more earning incentives, raises or bonuses to help you meet the continued challenge of supporting yourself and your family in a competitive economy.
You Are Working Below Your Abilities
When you took this job you were promised advancements and a chance to progress and grow, but you've been kept at the same task for months or years without the possibility of promotion to a new and challenging position. A company that keeps you at a task that is either below your abilities or is not progressing with the times, is essentially keeping a tool dull. It cannot properly function and help the company to succeed. By sticking with a company that holds you back, you are essentially shooting yourself in the foot because you are making yourself unemployable by not keeping your skills up to date. If this is the case it is better for you if you leave sooner rather than later.
The Work Conditions Become Unsafe
It most definitely will be time to change employers if your working conditions become unsafe. If the standards have recently slipped and you are working too much overtime or working on equipment that is not properly maintained or faulty, then you are unnecessarily risking harm to yourself and other employees. If you have complained to management and things still haven't changed, it is time for you to make the switch before you have to deal with some serious consequences.
Failure to Thrive
Your job has become absolute drudgery. There is nothing to look forward to. There is no one on staff that you enjoy working with and there is nothing to challenge you anymore. In a recent study it was found that an employee will thrive at their job if there is a sense of pride, a sense of challenge or a feeling of helping the greater good. Interestingly these goals rated higher for motivation than monetary rewards. So if you have no motivation to be at your job, no amount of money can excite you enough to keep you happy and fulfilled. If you have reached the stage where your job provides no challenge and no feelings of helping the greater good. It is time to move on.
If you are considering leaving your job and have discovered the above reasons may play into your feelings of dissatisfaction, please note that can find greater happiness and fulfillment in another place of employment. You don't have to stay where you are not happy and it can only benefit you to move on.
