and subject to change, but never make any objective or universal claims, and never claim reason or truth for the fact that Post-Modernism renounces these ideas. Finally, Post-Modernism attacks the idea of knowledge. Post-Modernism stipulates that knowledge is functional, that you acquire knowledge not for the sake of being knowledgeable but for using that knowledge. This Post-Modernist view is evident today in school systems when emphasis is put on skills and training, rather than an idealistic and universal idea of education. In regards to Modernism, Post-Modernism is more so the promotion of the idea of chaos, of inaccuracy and disorder.
Post-Modernist challenge to grand narratives and to the idea of knowledge is reflected in their criticisms of literature. For instance, a normal criticism of a story might be, "The character was not developed well enough." Post-Modernism criticism would not look at the character as an entity of itself. Post-Modernism would attack the frame of reference, "What is a person?" It might venture to criticize other criticism by asking "What is development?" These questions go back to another fundamental principle of Post-Modern thought. As mentioned previously, Post-Modernists are very reluctant to speak in absolutes, so as a result they speak in subjection. A Post-Modernist would argue that your definition of character development could radically differ from someone else's definition of character development, and as a result of that potential, you cannot say for certain who is right or who is wrong. Whose subjective opinion is right? Society teaches that opinions can never be right or wrong, and thus dilemma ensues. This idea of subjection shows the tendency for Post-Modernism to attack the pillars of ideas, not the ideas itself. As mentioned before, this leads to Post-Modernism's acclamation for disorder. Figuratively we could compare Post-Modern criticism to a tree of sorts. At the top of a tree is a new idea, and since all ideas are subject to criticism, especially new ideas, the idea awaits to be challenged. Post-Modernism will not attack the idea in itself, but will instead chop the tree down from the base, to cause the idea to crumble in on itself. That is the attack on a grand narrative, on the assumption of absolute truth.
I will now try to show the confliction in Post-Modern Philosophy.
Post-Modernism has been called the end of philosophy. It maintains that no absolute truth can be known, so therefore philosophy cannot
