There are several principle elements in writing fiction:
Characterization
Storyl ine
Theme
Style & writing
Point of view
(Genre)
These are the principle techniques of writing. Style can be personal style. Of course, you also need to know the principle of excellent writing, including grammar and spelling. You can master these techniques by writing and by reading the masters of these techniques, and the masters from every civilization.
However, all writers who master these techniques are not necessarily going to make use of them in the same manner.
Genre also influences the ways in which these technique are used, and different genres have different master techniques.
There are also many different literary traditions, but there are certain essentials in almost all of our storytelling traditions. We can learn from all of them.
