Dental implants are today's best alternative to your own natural teeth. Dental implants are artificial teeth fastened by tiny screws implants in the jawbone. They are placed as firmly as the root system holds your own natural teeth. They also allow you to function more normally than dentures and bridges.
If you are thinking about getting some dental implants, be aware that not everyone is a good candidates for dental implants.
The following have been identified as major factors that can be harmful to the success of dental implants:
1. Smoking tobacco or other substances
2. Recreation drug use and or heavy alcohol use
3. Poor oral hygiene
4. Active periodontal (gum disease)
5. Active caries ( tooth decay)
6. Diabetes
7. Tooth bruxing or clenching
There are certain medical problems and conditions that may interfere with implant success. They include but not limited to:
1. Cardiac (heart disease)
2. Pulmonary (lung disease) such as asthma, emphysema
3. Liver disease such as hepatitis cirrhosis
4. Renal (kidney disease)
5. Bleeding disorders or use of anti-coagulant medications
6. Chronic steroid or immunosupppressive drug use
7. History of radiation to the jaws
8. Lack of bone to support the implants
Your dentist and implant surgeon can evaluate you to determine if implants are right for you.
