For people who want to quit, the task is a tough call. Nicotine in the cigarette is as addictive as amphetamines, cocaine or opium. Only 5-10% of people who want to quit eventually are successful. But under a quitting program they are twice as successful.
so,
1)Join a program and seek medical advice. It has been sen that on an average 5-7 sittings are required.
2)Drugs: Nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches, inhalers and gums. Bupropion is an antidepressant drug and has been found to be useful in reducing the relapse(after one has given up an smoke) for 6-12 months. Though the effect at 12 months seems to wear down and people have the same relapse rate as they would without the drug. In summary the effect lasts for only an year.
3)Exercise: In a very recent study(March 2007) in the journal "Addiction". It was seen that a brisk 1-mile walk had the largest and longest-lasting post-exercise effect, reducing cravings for as long as 50 minutes.
Thus more than one therapy is more useful than just one drug in increasing the success rate.
