This February we decided to spend our skiing holiday in Slovenia. Looking at the ski resorts on offer, we narrowed it down to what appeared to be the two largest centres; Kranjska Gora and Krvavec. Most of the organised package tours seemed to be heading out to Kranjska Gora, so we decided to avoid the British crowds and head off to Krvavec.
~~Choosing A Place to Stay~~
From the websites, there did not seem to be a lot of choice in Krvavec itself. It seemed as if most people decide to stay in nearby Ljubljana and drive over to the slopes every day. Luckily we did not choose this option, instead heading off for the Pension Tia; a small hotel in Krvavec village which offered half board room for a reasonable price.
Although we had minimal information from the Slovenian website, we felt certain that we had chosen one of the best locations in Krvavec, and had also got a reasonable price. The pension was easily booked via email, and closer to the time we chose to pay a 30% deposit via credit card. This was easily done by calling the Pension direct. The owner, Ales, speaks excellent English and the transaction was efficiently completed in a few short minutes.
~~Arrival~~
We flew into Ljubljana Airport, and were immediately greeted by the taxi firm that we had booked in advance (for a much more reasonable price). The drive from Ljubljana Airport to Krvavec takes about 15 minutes and cost us 5E per person. It is worth noting that the drive from the centre of Ljubljana to Krvavec is much longer and takes around 25 minutes.
The taxi dropped us off by the cable car ticket office, and swept off into the distance with a friendly wave. I must admit to feeling some apprehension at this point. The bottom of the cable car is basically a rather depressing car park, which at 5pm was completely empty.
Luckily the ticket seller seemed to know what was happening and called the cable car operators to tell them that Pension Tia residents were on their way. They slowed the cars down for us so that we could heave our heavy bags into the tiny bubbles and jump in after them. We were not charged for this trip, and quickly found ourselves being whisked up the mountain.
The cable car ride seemed to go on forever, as we sailed high above the forests, looking down on deer and other animals far below. Suddenly we broke through the cloud, and found ourselves in brilliant sunshine, and another world entirely on the top of a beautiful mountain. The grey slush had disappeared and we were surrounded
