Gnome Treasure

Phillip stepped out of the car onto scorched dry ground inherited from his grandfather. Surrounded by thriving cities, Phillip knew his eccentric grandfather had a purpose for the land without reason.

Phillip drove here to have a look for himself. After months, the realtor unsuccessfully found no investors interested in the undeveloped property, which attracted a wealth of attention normally.

Squatting back on his haunches, Phillip picked up a handful of sandy dust studying the land as he let it sift between his fingers falling loosely onto the ground. A jackrabbit poked his head out quickly disappearing back inside the burrow upon seeing Phillip.

Phillip walked nearer finding that the rabbit had backfilled the tunnel. Phillip suddenly felt the urge to camp here tonight. Humoring the thought, Phillip laughed, “Maybe my grandfather will appear and tell me what to do with this place.”

Phillip returned as dusk was settling on the horizon. Darkness came quickly followed by dropping temperatures. Phillip finished a sack of fast food before stretching his sleeping bag on the backseat.

Bright flashing lights woke Phillip. He peeked out over the windowsill. Gnomes were coming from the ground guiding a spaceship landing. The spaceship continued settling down until it had disappeared beneath ground surface, the gnomes too.

When the sky was pitch black, Phillip reasoned that none of it was real. Whatever it had been, he decided this was not the place for a residential development. It was perfect for an exciting theme park.

Phillip’s theme park became an immediate success. There were those who said the park was haunted. Scientist came leaving with negative results. Most of the sitings were believed to be trespassers taking advantage of the park during the off-season.

Phillip never revealed his story, however he did he did include an unusual request in his will. “Leave the park as you find it now. It is a green park.”
