Makeup is often used as a tool to boost self-esteem and build self-confidence. One aspect of makeup most individuals find helpful is the ability to cover blemishes and imperfections. This is certainly the case of those with a birthmark; in particular, a birthmark on the face. However, covering a birthmark with makeup is rarely a simple process, without the correct products, tools and know-how.
But that is all about to change! Following is a tutorial on how to cover birthmarks using makeup. You’re covered all the way with these step-by-step instructions...so read on!
Step One – Foundation
The cover process is best started by using a good-quality foundation, which matches your skin tone perfectly. Applying the base first will achieve some of the cover work, minimizing the amount of concealer and powder required. A stick foundation will provide the most coverage. Blend well with the opaque consistency of the concealer used in the next step. Foundation may be applied as desired, using a brush or sponge, blending well.
Step Two – Concealer
Secondly, a high-coverage concealer is applied to the required area. A cake concealer designed especially for covering birthmarks is recommended, such as the Dermablend brand. Products such as these will offer the strongest coverage and longevity. It is best to choose a shade which matches your skin tone, so it will blend seamlessly.
Application
Depending on the size of the birthmark you wish to cover, concealer may be applied with a small, pointed brush for precision; or a sponge for speedily covering larger areas. Regardless of the tool used, concealer is best applied in thin layers, with color built up gradually until the desired level of coverage is achieved. Applying thick layers could result in over-application and an unsightly caked finish. Once the desired coverage is achieved, the concealer must be blended seamlessly into the foundation until there are no visible lines. Following this, the next step is finishing the cover.
Step Three – Powder
As both foundation and concealer are creamy products, they are best set with a face powder, to achieve maximum coverage and staying power. As with the first two steps, it is recommended to choose a powder that matches your skin tone for flawless results. For the highest level of coverage and longevity, a matte-pressed powder is the best variety to choose. It can be applied as lightly or as densely as desired, depending on your requirements.
Application
For maximum coverage, apply face powder with a powder puff, press onto the skin in light layers until the desired cover is achieved. Alternatively, powder can be applied with a large, rounded brush to achieve a light dusting of cover. It is best to apply powder to the entire face, blending well to avoid any obvious lines and smoothing the entire complexion to blend in the concealer previously applied.
After following these steps, covering a birthmark will become a little easier and results will be more successful. Experiment with different products and tools may be required, but through trial and error and plenty of practice, the end result can be flawless.
