We only had one police officer in the small town where I was raised in the 60's. He was an older man and was calm, cool, and collected, most of the time.He would lead the Christmas parade every year. Behind him would be the local fire truck with Santa on it.He was the type who would give everyone several chances before arresting them.If a person was picked up for public intoxication whether it was an adult or juvenile he would take them home instead of jail.It could have been because the jail was about 25 miles from our town and that would cost the city a lot of gas and there wouldn't have been a cop there for the rest of the day or night. He had one man who was what I guess you would call," the town drunk ",and he had several run ins with him and usually let the man off or took him home to sleep it off.One night the drunk hit our cop and this must have been the last straw because our beloved cop took him to jail this time to the county seat!
The next funny story about our local police was when a new constable replaced the older on who finally retired. This cop was a big,and fat man,and slow on foot. One Halloween night he ran across some teenagers who were up to mischief. When he gave chase on foot he got excited and pulled his gun and fired a shot at the boys and hit himself in the foot.He went around the next several months limping. Everyone nicknamed him "Chester",from the old t.v.show," Gun Smoke". He almost never lived that experience down from the town.
