Saying 'goodbye' is like dancing a last waltz...
Which is harder? Saying goodbye to a loved one as they leave this life or saying goodbye to a loved one who no longer wants to be in your life? They are both undoubtedly difficult, both situations leave you with only a memory of someone who is now absent from you and there is nothing 'good' about goodbye when you feel this absence.
When we lose people who leave because they die it is different than losing someone who still remains yet the pain can be similar. Knowing you will never see someone again who now ' walks with angels' is not something that was chosen or determined nor is it something in the grasp of your control which you may attempt to change. You may only dream of the day to when you meet up with them again in a better place, that is, if this is a belief you hold.
When we lose someone who has moved on from our lives it can feel like a death. It can feel like uglies that one doesn't want to feel so they choose to become numb and feel nothing at all. Yet when the numbness leaves you the pain is still there in its entirety for you to feel, again, and again, until you feel all of it. Feel it and let it go because there is a dance card in your hand waiting to be filled.
I would rather not say goodbye, but instead say, "thank you for the waltz," take my curtsy and dream of future ballroom dance's to come. For one day I am certain that after the Concerto stops playing someone will dance out of the ballroom with me, and stay forever in my arms.
This is what fairytales are made of and goodbye is never written in a fairy tale you know. Only happily ever after's. Meanwhile, I shall polish my glass slippers and keep them close to me. I mustn't be late for the next ball!
