Ghosts are the energy of a living being that has passed on from the Earth plane to the spirit plane. All living beings are spiritual energy, encapsulated in a body until such time that body dies; however, the energy does not die with the body. It continues on.
Ghosts are often called spirits, apparitions and poltergeists. They manifest themselves in a way that is sensed by living humans in many ways. They can be subtle and noticed by only those people who are sensitive to such energy. Other people have psychic gifts where they are able to see, hear, or sense these energies through scent or receiving message.
For most people, unless they are in a particularly haunted environment may not even notice ghostly signs. A misplaced item, a unusual mist or orb in a photograph, a shadow or blurred image on a video; these are subtle signs of spirit energy.
There are different types of ghosts. There are spirits who have crossed into the light and are not stuck in the Earth plane who come back to look after loved ones. These are more commonly though of as spirit guides and when you see or sense them, they are apparitions. If you can see them, they will be in a form that is familiar to you, or how they preferred to be seen.
Your great-aunt Mary could appear to you as a twenty-year-old or an eighty-year-old. In general those who have crossed over (the term used for those who have crossed into the light) are not as active or as powerful as earth-bound spirits. You may see them in a flash as they stand beside your bed while you are falling asleep; you may hear their voice in your ear or you may listen to the radio and hear a song that reminds you of them. Their presence is most often gentle and caring.
Earth-bound spirits are different, in that they derive energy from the environment around them. They haven't crossed over into the light for reasons personal to them; they may not know they are dead if they died suddenly, or they may be aware but afraid to go to God for fear of some perceived evil they did in life. They can be sad, or angry, confused, or simply aren't ready to leave yet. Some tales of ghosts are touching, such as those who are looking for a lost loved one, forever searching not knowing that their loved one may have crossed over. These spirits tend to attach themselves to a specific location, thing, or even a person. Mary Ann Winkowski, who is best
