Lent: Just another fad?
Most of my coworkers are either atheist or agnostic. So you will imagine my surprise when this year, many of them asked me what I was giving up for Lent.
I was, of course, glad to have the chance to share my faith; yet discouraged to have them wondering and following along simply because it is in, this year, to observe Lent. By observing Lent I mean the practice of giving up something particular and tangible in the 40 days prior to Easter
As I see it, there are two reasons to observe Lent:
1. to fast as part of a period of mourning in sympathy and recognition of Jesus' death for us. Naturally that mourning period is ended on Easter when we celebrate both Jesus' resurrection and our own new life in Him. The celebration is made sweeter when we once again enjoy what we have given up.
2. to deprive ourselves of something pleasurable (chocolate, alcohol, soda, tv) or rid ourselves of something that sets itself up in competition with God (vanity, fame, wealth, convenience) so that instead, we might honor God by showing him He is Lord over these things and over our lives.
This year I have chosen to stop buying meals at work. It is a costly and unhealthy habit. It prevents me from honoring God with my money, and from taking care of my body, the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Despite the fact that Lent is a fad right now, I still choose to share my thoughts and my commitment with those who ask. While I may observe Lent as part of my faith walk with God, I also recognize that it too, is an observance set up by man. While it is a way to grow closer to God, it is not a God in itself. Lent has the power neither to damn nor to save; yet, when observed with a heart that is right and true, it will bring you closer to to One who does have the power to save.
