Awnings are used to cover decks and patios and provide shade next to an RV. Retractable awnings can be "rolled" or "folded" into a closed position when not in use or during high winds. Some awnings may have motors that automatically retract the awning while others may rely on a hand crank style mechanism. Both types can be manually retracted as needed. Automatic awnings may feature a manual backup option in case power is lost. 

Verify that the automatic retraction feature is turned off or disabled if you are manually folding an awning with a powered retraction system. Do not turn on or use the automatic controls while doing a manual retraction as this could damage the unit.

Locate the manual lever rod that retracts the awning. Note that some awnings may come with a removal rod. In the case of removal rods, insert the tip of the rod into the retracting mechanism located on one corner of the awning. You may need to locate the retracting mechanism up inside the awning as some designs may have the mechanism hidden out of view when the awning is open.

Verify that any locking mechanisms that may hold the awning frame open are unlocked. In some cases there may be sliding clips that slide back off the hinges to allow them to bend. Note that there may be multiple locking mechanisms in place that prevent the awning from accidentally folding or retracting. You may also need to push in on some hinges to unlock them depending on the make and model of the awning. 

Grasp the rod or lever and begin turning. If the awning does not begin the retract, try turning or rotating the lever in the opposite direction.

Continue turning the rod or lever until the awning is fully retracted. Verify the awning is fully retracted by turning the rod until it no longer turns. Remove the rod if you had to insert it initially.

If the awning has a latch or locking mechanism to hold the closed awning securely in place make sure this is enabled before finishing this task.

Be careful doing this task manually. It can be exerting based on your health conditions and care should be taken not to overexert yourself. Take breaks as needed and do this task in portions until completed. 

Awnings on RVs should be fully retracted and secured before driving. All awnings if retractable should be folded up before high winds to protect from damage.
