How to replace RV seat padding

For comfort your camper or RV might have padded seats such as benches and chairs. Often these pads are cushions like you would find on a couch, that is they can be lifted up and replaced. In some cases the cushion cover can be salvaged and new padding can be installed inside the cover. Commonly foam padding is used inside seat, couch, and bench cushions. If your camper cushions are worn out, have lost their softness, or have water damage; you can replace them yourself without any special tools or skills.

Remove any of the pillows or belongings on the cushions. Make sure the area is clean and dry before proceeding.

Lift the cushions up off of the bench or seat. If the cushions appear stuck or won't lift up, pull them away from the back of the bench or seat slightly.

Look for a string or cord connected to the cushion cover and connected to the bench or seat. Undo the knot and remove the cushion. Determine if you want to replace the padding or the cushion itself. Unzip or open the padding slit on the side or bottom of the cushion and remove the padding to replace it. Keep the cushion cover if desired.

Use a measuring tape to measure the padding or cushion. Purchase a matching size cushion or padding from an RV or camping supply store. Some cushions may not have removable padding in which case you'll need to replace the entire item. You may also be able to purchase appropriate sizes from furniture or bedding stores.

Insert the new padding into the cushion cover. Zip up or close the slit in the cover to secure the new padding. Place the new cushion or newly padded cushion cover back onto the bench or chair. If there is still a tie cord or string; tie it to one of the chair spokes or bench supports.

You can also purchase foam padding and use scissors to cut the padding down to the appropriate size and shape needed for your particular cushion cover. Always measure the old padding before cutting new padding to size.

Water damaged cushions should be dried out promptly and replaced as needed due to the risk of mold growth in the cushions and in the padding. Mold can lead to bad odors, and irritants in the air in the RV.
