Recipes: Pomegranate Wine

Since the dawn of recorded history man has been fascinated with the ruby red magical and mysterious jewels that are pomegranates. In ancients times pomegranates were used in rituals and were even considered an aphrodisiac.

The health benefits of pomegranates are still being studied with astounding findings. There are medicinal benefits to be had from all part of this plant, with new products on the market constantly that include pomegranates on their ingredient list. With all of the hoopla about the pomegranate’s health benefits, you might consider adding this tasty treat to something other than your diet. If you have ever tried and enjoyed wine making, you will love making pomegranate wine. It’s a wonderful hobby and you may be delightfully surprised with the pomegranate’s taste and nutritional benefits.

The fruit of the pomegranate is sweet yet has a slightly detectable tartness. Pomegranates are grown in many different regions of the world with some variations in taste but all pomegranates produce an exquisite tasting wine. Here is a basic recipe for pomegranate wine that you can try. Once you get the hang of making pomegranate wine you can create your own variations.

Ingredients and supplies

6 or 7 ripe pomegranates (depending on size)

12 cups of water

4 cups granulated sugar

1 pound raisins

2 teaspoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon pectin enzyme

1 teaspoon yeast nutrient

1 campden tablet

1 package wine yeast

Directions

When making pomegranate wine, you should wear gloves and protect surfaces; pomegranates can easily stain hands and countertops. Cut open the pomegranate and remove its seeds from the white membrane. Juice the seeds through a cheese-cloth over a bowl and be sure not to include any of the skin; as this may cause bitterness. Now add water and all other ingredients except for the yeast. Stir well to dissolve the sugar and let it sit overnight in a fermenting container.

Next, sprinkle the yeast over the mixture and stir. Then stir daily for six days. Then strain mixture again and siphon into secondary fermenting container, and seal airtight. You can enjoy your pomegranate wine after three months or fermentation but waiting a year will produce a better product.

Pomegranate wine is sold commercially but it can easily be made at home as well. The pomegranate makes a great medium bodied wine that may actually have many health benefits as well. One taste of sweet, fruity, wine will demonstrate once again why it’s a superfood.
