ESPN and most national sports broadcasters have an East Coast bias. Why does this bias exist?
(1) Population: More Americans live on the East Coast than in any other region. Furthermore, a large number of large cities and compact urban areas are found there. New York, the largest city in the United States, is on the East Coast.
(2) Location: The headquarters of a lot of media organizations are on the East Coast. ESPN's worldwide headquarters is located in Bristol, Connecticut.
(3) Media: A large percentage of sports media are from the East Coast. That also contributes to the bias.
(4) Time Zones: Most Americans are asleep by the time West Coast games are finished. That leads to lower ratings and less press for games on the West Coast.
(5) Teams: More high-ranking basketball teams are on the East Coast. The Big East and ACC are possibly the best basketball conferences in the country. Duke, North Carolina, Georgetown, Syracuse, the University of Florida, and dozens of other strong basketball schools are east of the Mississippi River.
