TV show reviews: Jonas

by Marilyn Justine

Created on: March 06, 2011

In a world of reality television and programmes attempting to break any taboos left it is good to see three young men presenting us with good clean entertainment for all the family. Their parents should be proud.

Jonas is a show that even if you've never hear of Jonas Brothers or are unfamiliar with their music, you will still be able to enjoy. Added to the fact that you don't have to be a teen or pre-teen to appreciate the humour. The Jonas Brothers do not attempt to portray themselves as serious actors in the vein of Laurence Olivier or even Spencer Tracy. The fact that they are in a band called 'Jonas' and the characters names just happen to be their own names reiterate this fact. They are brothers called Kevin, Joe and Nick and they are in a band: sounds familiar. It is as if they just want to try their hand in the acting business by playing it safe and playing a version of themselves, which is to be admired not dismissed.

The great thing about Disney Channel shows is that you can almost guarantee a family friendly air to them. Jonas and Jonas LA (the re-named second season) do not fail to deliver this. The brothers are referred to as 'rock stars' or being in a 'rock band' but really they are just three guys who love music and who you could safely take home to meet your mother. They also all have their own on-screen and off-screen personalities which shine through. The show almost goes so far as to categorise them: Kevin is the funny one, Joe is the (thinks he's) cool one and Nick is the serious one. The boys are clearly aware of their stereotyped personas and play them up in an almost caricature way on screen.

Kevin, who is sometimes dismissed in the band since he does not sing but plays guitar and does occasional backing vocals, gets to shine in the show. He show a comical and quirky side that is strangely absent from the stage persona he projects as part of the band. Joe also gets to show a comical side with some strange mouth actions that are uncannily like Melissa Joan Hart as Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, and the fact that even as a 'rock star' with great hair, he still get insecure around girls he likes, just like anybody else. Nick is, well, Nick. The serious Jonas who loves writing, playing a thousand different instruments and singing with passion He reads books, doesn't like to go to parties and is a wholesome American boy.

There are some hilarious scenes in Jonas, some great tunes, its all clean fun and there are some nice looking boys who have been raised right. What's not to love? For best character my vote goes to Kevin but for best hair, it has to be Joe.
