The Name of Jesus...

I'm reading a book called The Name of Jesus. It's a powerful book, that starts out talking about the power and authority vested in His name.

As I am reading this book, I am recalling a book I read years ago about the Jesus Prayer, and how for centuries people have meditated on this prayer, and that it has proved very powerful in many lives. I think the long version of the prayer goes something like this...."Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." There are all sorts of variations on the Jesus prayer, the simplest being to say and/or meditate the name, Jesus, over and over....

The Name of Jesus book delves deeply into what the Bible says about Jesus and His name. Yet I am impressed as I think back over one of the toughest times in my life, when I was left suddenly by my husband with three children under five, a financial mess, and rumors so thickly spread that I lost every friendship but one, and even my job was threatened....That was the time in my life when I held on to the Jesus prayer night and day, and I came through it all with God bringing good out of evil for me in my love for Him as Lord....

These days my struggles seem mild compared with when I first started life as a single mom. As I read this book on the name of Jesus, I note how I have let go of the Jesus Prayer, and I have picked up the simplest version, meditating His name off and on all weekend. I find I have worried less, as every time I go to worry, I make myself shift to thinking on The Jesus Prayer. And my most strong-willed child has had a more mellow weekend....
