Book reviews: Bitten, by Kelley Armstrong

“Bitten” by Kelley Armstrong is the first book of Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series. This is a great book to read, full of excitement, and thrills around every corner.

Elena Michaels is the only known female werewolf in existence. It is genetically impossible to have a female werewolf, the only way a female becomes a werewolf is if they are bitten and survive the change. Elena was bitten by her now ex-fiance, Clayton Danvers aka Clay. The story begins with Elena living in Toronto, trying to go back to her human life, because she didn’t want to be a werewolf. She lives with her boyfriend Philip Madden, and he doesn’t know she is a werewolf. Elena has been keeping it from him but it’s getting hard to sneak away in the night so she can change. Then Jeremy Danvers, the Pack leader, calls her.

Elena returns to the Pack in Stonehaven and is pulled into helping them deal with a few Mutts, werewolves that don’t belong to a Pack, and struggles to keep her humanity while being dragged back into the werewolf life. The Mutts have joined together, their leader is Daniel Santos, a former member of the Pack but left after another Pack member killed his brother. Daniel wants to get back at the Pack, and collects a few Mutts who then bite a few serial killers changing them to werewolves. He does this thinking these serial killer werewolves will be the ultimate weapon against the Pack. The plan Daniel uses is to have these killer werewolves leave human bodies on Pack land, which then draws human attention to the Pack and makes it difficult for them to move around without raising suspicions, which is exactly what the Pack does not want.

To defeat Daniel, Elena must work with Clay and the other Pack members like Nicholas Sorrentino who is a childhood friend of Clay’s and son of Antonio Sorrentino, another Pack member. She is dragged on a journey, and while she fights to keep a hold on her humanity and not loose herself to being a werewolf, she learns about how she actually lost herself in her attempts to live a human life in Toronto.

The Pack struggles to keep up with the Mutts and stop their plans, and to keep the humans from catching on to what they are. There is a fight, either physical or mental on about every page. The physical fights are full of action, and will have your heart racing as you think you are there fighting with the Pack for your life.

Kelley Armstrong draws you in, slowly at first, and then piles things on as things start stacking up for the characters. There is action and excitement on every page and if you choose to read this book you will not be disappointed; in fact you will likely find yourself looking for other books of Armstrong’s including “Stolen” which is the next book of this series.
