I have found the following to be a guide to how I strive to live a Christian life. It is not easy and I am far from perfect but I have found the following to be guidelines that has filled my life with a little more comfort, a little more happiness and a little more peaceful understanding.
I have always referred to it as a pyramid but it can be called a tree or whatever you want to call it. You can draw it up however you want. I learned most of it from a wise old man while attending history class in high school.
The top of the pyramid is God. Put God first in everything you do. If you need a new car, pray about it. If you need help with your teenager, pray about it. He knows what is best for you and can help you the best. He knows what kind of health insurance you need, where you need to shop for clothes, and what strategies are best with dealing with your own parents. He knows it ALL. Why not go to someone that knows it all? He might not answer you on your time but He will on His time. However, if you put it on His time, it will be the perfect time, and if you don't seem to get the answer you wanted, then He is doing that for a reason. Maybe He felt that there is something better you need to look for! Ever thought of that? Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers ya know. Man and this world can only help you so much, I believe that is where God steps in and closes the gap. He can do what man cannot do.
Next on the pyramid is your family. This can include your closest and dearests friends. This, in a lot of circumstances is you too. You must take care of yourself. If you are not well and sound then how can you take care of your family? Your mental and physical health is vital to your happiness in this life. Take care of your children, mom, dad, brothers, sisters and cousins. They are a high priority. If they are in need find a way to help them. If they need direction find a way to lead them. Whatever it is, put them high on the list and take care of them. You will not regret it.
The third spot on the pyramid goes to your job or your education. For kids, it is their schoolwork. For adults it is their jobs. You must take care of your job/schoolwork. I will guarantee you that if you are not happy at work/school or you are doing things that create conflicts at work/school then you will not be happy at home and EVERYONE in the house will suffer because of it. Do the right thing and take care of your job/schoolwork. Get enough sleep to be productive, cancel golf outings in order to take care of your job, put off going to the movies every once in a while in order to stay ahead at work or in school. The bottom line is, take care of your job/schoolwork and provide for your family and get a good education!
Finally on the pyramid is your hobbies. There is no doubt in my mind that God wants us to enjoy His incredible world and have fun, moral hobbies. But I also know that He wants us to put our priorities in order and by following this pyramid you will. Hobbies are great, but they must must must come last.
In conclusion, this is rather simple and compact but it is like gold if you ask me. If you keep these priorities in the proper order I really feel like you are taking your best shot at living a comfortable, happy, understanding and peaceful life. Try it and see if you like it!
