Throughout the ages man has asked the question of why Jesus let himself be subjected to death on the cross. Why would the Son of God, the doer of many miracles, and a gifted teacher subject himself to such a painful death. A kind of death that is for the worse sinners, people who committed the worse crimes, a death that was not only embarrassing but cruel and unusual even during his time. Why would the Messiah be subjected to this kind of death. The answer has long been researched, argued and written about by a wide range of theologists and Christian writers since his death and resurrection.
The first answer to this question is one of fulfillment, Jesus came and fulfilled all of the prophesies that were ever written about him in the Old Testament, he also would fulfill the law that was given to Moses long before he was ever born. The law given was a quick fix, it helped the problem for the people, however with Jesus death, the people were given a solution to the problem, an everlasting solution that would be able to protect them throughout all time. He provided them with a way that could not be overcome. Sacrifices made earlier involved animals, this sacrifice was a more permanent one.
The Second One was one of redemption, the sin of Adam brought death and slavery to sin, however Jesus death redeemed his children and provided them with a way to the salvation that was promised to them. He was innocent and we were sinful, however he allowed himself to become the sinner, the wretched, the cast out, the bad and the hopeless. He took the sin of every man and woman upon himself, though he had not committed any of these sins he became the blamed. He took the beating that humanities deserved, he took the wrath of God against him, he took the anguish of the world upon himself so that humans would be saved.
The third reason is to provide mankind with a chance at everlasting life, spiritual death was defeated and the redeemer took all this death and destruction with him. Offering his people a chance to become the heirs to everlasting, pure and perfect life with him and the Father God. He gave men a way for salvation, he brought the truth that would allow all men to have the chance to enter the kingdom of God and he became the light that would lead them on their way. He became the defense attorney with your name on his lips he argues your case to God the Father, he speaks on your behalf and he provides you with a new life in him. His name the route you take to bring you to the father and his life given so you can have one.
There is no greater love that that provided by the Grace of God, who loved you so much that he sent his only begotten son, his special child to your aid. Not only as your brother but as a ransom for your sins so that you can live with him in paradise forever. This is why Jesus came and died upon the cross.
