NCAA Basketball: Predicting the 2007 Men's Final Four

With the NCAA Men's basketball tournament field once again set, most office work will again come to a standstill for a few days, while the annual ritual of picking the winners of an office pool become prevalent again.

The reason this is so fun and so appealing is because it's such a total crap shoot. With the field being as competitive as it is, and the one-loss-and-out nature of the games, you always have some crazy, unpredictable results. Even "the experts" usually see their brackets crumble to dust after the first weekend's worth of games, because of those crazy, unpredictable upsets that invariably happen every year. It's always a great feeling when a #14 beats a #3 on the first day, and you stand up and say "I picked that game!" and everybody else is wadding up their sheet and throwing it away because they just lost one of their Final Four teams.

Having said all that, here are my picks for the Final Four, as well as some random upsets I've picked along the way. You always have to try to pick some, to get that feeling I was talking about, and because that's what the winning bracket will always have.

So, here's my Final Four, by region, with at least one other crazy upset prediction from each as well.

We'll start with the Midwest; I've tabbed the #1 seed and defending champion Florida Gators to make it to the Final Four. Being a Big10 Fan, I really wanted to put Wisconsin up there, but the reality is that they only have one reliable scorer. They play great defense, but they just don't get the points. Ohio State showed that weakness in the Big 10 Title Game last week, and Florida has the balanced attack to be able to do the same thing. Florida has experience, a good deep balanced offense, and good shooting, I can't pick anyone to keep them from Atlanta this year.

For my big Midwest upset, I've picked against a team from my home state of Indiana. I think Notre Dame (#6) got a really tough pairing in the first round, against a very underrated Winthrop squad (#11). Winthrop is riding a long win streak, and Notre Dame won't put an end to it. I almost picked Winthrop over #3 seed Oregon too, but didn't quite do it because Oregon has some great perimeter shooting.

Moving on to the West Bracket, my Final Four team this year is Kansas. I usually pick against Kansas when they're a #1 seed, because they always seem to lose early. However, this bracket seems awfully weak to me, and I just couldn't pick anybody to beat them.

The #2 pick, UCLA, often disappoints in the tourney
