Alternative accommodations offer an escape from the standardized anonymity of large, international hotel chains. The options available can be significantly cheaper, more convenient or they can give a glimpse of life in different cultures. Most, however, will not offer the range of facilities found in many hotels, might be of unpredictable quality and could involve some risk. Before taking the plunge , you need to consider whether the benefits will outweigh potential disadvantages according to your priorities and those of your vacation companions.
Here are ten non-hotel options to consider.
1. Bed and Breakfast
B+Bs offer rooms with breakfast provided, and sometimes also an evening meal. The owner usually lives on the premises. Pubs, small houses and larger guesthouses can be providers of B+B accommodation.
In the past, at least in the UK, B+Bs were frequently associated with the image of a fierce landlady, who would throw her guests onto the street after breakfast and not let them back in until evening. Today, a B+B can mean many things. At the top end of the scale, many cost as much as an expensive hotel and offer home comforts in luxurious surroundings as well as a more personal experience. At the bottom end, they can involve dingy rooms with creaking beds and guests having to share bathroom facilities.
A site such as Bed and Breakfast World can be immensely helpful in finding a good B+B. It features B+Bs in a number of countries and guests can leave reviews about their experiences.
2. Hostels
The word "hostel" brings to mind typical backpackers' accommodation with shared dormitories and minimal facilities. Such hostels do exist and are a cheap, if not always cheerful, way for the young and impoverished to see the world. Personal safety and security are the main issues with this type of accommodation. Hostelz.com provides price information and user reviews for over 4000 hostels in over 8000 cities worldwide.
Youth hostels under the aegis of Hostelling International have had a massive change of image. Rules on eligibility have changed and most hostels are open to members of all ages. Some provide high-quality accommodations in private rooms and locations include medieval castles, log cabins, ultramodern buildings and even a jumbo jet. Prices remain reasonable.
3. Vacation Rentals
Renting a house, villa or apartment is ideal for anyone who wants complete privacy and a choice of whether to cook or eat out at. Some rental companies offer maid services for
