Alternative accommodations offer an escape from the standardized anonymity of large, international hotel chains. The options available can be significantly cheaper, more convenient or they can give a glimpse of life in different cultures. Most, however, will not offer the range of facilities found in many hotels, might be of unpredictable quality and could involve some risk. 1. Bed and Breakfast

B+Bs offer rooms with breakfast provided, and sometimes also an evening meal. The owner usually lives on the premises. Pubs, small houses and larger guesthouses can be providers of B+B accommodation.

In the past, at least in the UK, B+Bs were frequently associated with the image of a fierce landlady, who would throw her guests onto the street after breakfast and not let them back in until evening.  Today, a B+B can mean many things. At the top end of the scale, many cost as much as an expensive hotel and offer home comforts in luxurious surroundings as well as a more personal experience.
