For fans of Flogging Molly's first two albums, Drunken Lullabies can be a bit of a let down. While the composition is outstanding and the band's sound is better than ever, this is a less vigorous and much more melancholy album than the two preceding. The lonely ballads have a deeper tone than in songs past, tearing at my heart as they remind me of dear friends lost in pursuit of drunken oblivion and death.
The notable exception to this abundance of wrist slitting songs is a lively number entitled "Rebels of the Sacred Heart". This song is guaranteed to make anyone jump to their feet and try to perform a jig. Put this song on at a party to watch a room full of people suddenly give their best collective impression of the Lord of the Dance.
All in all, what this album lacks in good times it makes up for in soul and depth.
