Why I believe tithing is still required by Christians under the New Testament.
I was asked a question the other day that has been leveled at me many times over the course of my ministry from the old and young alike. The question is regarding the validity of tithing under the New Testament covenant.
On both sides of this issue are people that have positive motivations; as well as others who argue for the sake of their own greediness. Yes, you read that right people, both for and against the issue of tithe sometimes argue their points out of sincere beliefs and sometimes out of serious self interest and greed.
Those who argue for the tithe state that it is a Biblical principle that is a requirement for all believers to follow and practice in both Old and New Testament covenants. On the flip side, the anti-tithe advocates feel that along with the sacrificial elements of the law concerning lambs and rams, the tithe too was done away at Calvary.
Either side deviates into the realms of darkness when they begin to argue their points from a motivation of self interest. To push the need to tithe upon people so that you can “increase” your salary is an evil, satanic ideology. But to also frame arguments solely to avoid an obligation and maintain personal “wealth” is just as satanic.
Now, for the record I argue that tithe is as scripturally valid in these current modern times as it was back during the times of Abram’s sojourn in the wilderness regions of Canaan. I believe this because of the reasons that I list here below but I do acknowledge that there can be people on the other side of this issue that are just as sincere in their faith, though I do believe they are sincerely wrong.
Many people that hold tithe to be no longer valid state that it is a product of the “law” and as such has been done away under our New Testament Covenant. To this I respond:
The act of tithing by Godly men and women predated the Law of Moses as did the act of circumcision. Abraham we are told in Genesis chapter 14 paid tithes to Melchizedek long before there was a Levitical priesthood, an earthly temple, or a man named Moses.
It is true that the tithe was re-confirmed in the Mosaic Law but it could hardly be said that it was introduced by that law. All the Mosaic Law did for the tithe was draw renewed attention to it just as it brought renewed attention to a long forgotten principle known as “Circumcision". In support of this claim (That
